Are you looking for a coonhound puppy as a hunting or working dog?

We breed a litter only when we plan to keep several ourselves, and we try to time the breeding for the smallest litter possible.  We DO NOT breed with the intention of selling pups.  We don't take any deposits until we've decided which pups to sell and have approved the new owner(s).  At that time, deposits are non-refundable unless we cancel the sale.
Our pups don't leave until they're at least 12 wks old.  Pups sold outright are usually priced from $250-400, with females priced higher than males.  We rarely sell our female pups outright unless they're already spayed.  We prefer to keep co-ownerships on those that we sell intact.  Those pups sold on co-ownerships are sold with a contract which the buyer needs to review and agree to prior to purchase.  If you don't like our contract, don't try to get a pup from us.  All our pups are special to us whether we still own them, or somebody else does.  Money is not our motivation for breeding.  If you just want to put your money down and take a pup home, you won't want a pup from Chisum-Trail Kennel.  We are interested and concerned about our pups for their entire lives and expect to maintain contact with their owners for however long that may be.  If you decide to sell a pup you purchased from us, we appreciate the courtesy of being given first option to buy it back.  We don't breed a lot of litters, so if we lose contact with our pups' owners, we lose a very valuable tool for analyzing and planning our breeding program.
Pups may be picked-up here or shipped at buyer's expense.  We prefer to ship by reputable ground transport when possible.
We can also meet within a 50 mile radius for the cost of fuel.
When shipping by air we choose the airline and will always attempt to put our pups on nonstop flights to the airport closest to you.  We try to ship to an airport that is within a 3 hr drive of your location, whenever possible.  Our closest major airports are Omaha and Minneapolis.  We add an extra $175* to the price of pups which are shipped from these airports.  This covers our fuel to the vet, the airport, and the cost of the health certificate.  Buyer pays for or provides the crate.  We don't have crates available to borrow.
Shipment may be available from the Des Moines airport to some locations.  If shipped from this airport, an additional $100* will be added to the price of the pup to cover our fuel to the vet, the airport, and the cost of the health certificate.
Payment for all shipping-related expenses must be received prior to shipping.  Some airlines don't offer COD shipments.  We will obtain an estimate for you from the airline, but that amount is never exact until we are actually at the airport shipping the pup.  If the estimate is more than $10 higher than the actual cost, we will promptly refund the difference.  If the estimate is more than $10 lower, we will hold the registration papers until we receive the additional amount.
We reserve the right to refuse to transport by air any pup who we feel isn't confident enough to handle the stress.

*This amount is subject to change at any time with the rise and fall of fuel prices.

Feeding our canine athletes

Whenever possible, we feed our dogs a diet of primarily raw meaty bones and whole carcasses.  Information about natural and more species-appropriate diets can be found in the following books:  The Holistic Guide For A Healthy Dog written by Wendy Volhard & Kerry Brown, DVM, The Complete Herbal Handbook For The Dog And Cat written by Juliette de Bairacli Levy, Give Your Dog A Bone and Grow Your Pups With Bones, both written by Dr. Ian Billinghurst, Natural Nutrition For Dogs and Cats:  The Ultimate Diet written by Kymythy R. Schultze, C.C.N., A.H.I., and Raw Meaty Bones written by Tom Lonsdale.
The commercial dog foods we have used and/or recommend are Viand, NDF, Wysong, Eagle Holistic and Natural Pack, Flint River Ranch, and Canidae.
Whenever possible, all medical and health care is managed holistically.  We prefer to address the whole problem rather than just suppressing symptoms.  We use and recommend products from the following companies: Ambrican - Marina Zacharias, Flutterbye Aromatics, K9 Kitchen, and B-Naturals.

Are you looking for a coonhound puppy as a pet?

We breed hunting hounds and the traits we strive for in our dogs often make them very challenging to live with as strictly pets.  A coonhound that's hunted can be an outstanding pet, but one that isn't can often be the dog-from-hell.
Lots of people own coonhounds that are wonderful pets, but we don't feel it's fair to the pup or the new owner to take that gamble.  We want pups with tons of natural instinct that require no training to hunt; just exposure and guidance.
The best place to find a coonhound that will be a non-hunting companion is through a coonhound rescue organization.  They work hard to evaluate and train these hounds to be a pleasure to have around the house and they want to make sure the dog and the owner(s) are a perfect match.  They often have puppies but sometimes the very best pets are adult coonhounds, especially for first-time coonhound owners.
Occasionally we do place puppies as pets, but rarely before the age of 6 months.  That gives us some time to see how much hunting instinct they're showing.  Those that we decide to place as pets must be spayed/neutered before going to their new homes and our vet won't do that prior to 5 months old.
